But on the other hand, it creates an incredibly convenient, easy-to-use, and stress-free interaction that it basically sucks the interesting and challenging part of meeting a potential mate and attracting them in a meaningful way — out. When Alexandra Tweten moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles, dating apps offered a way to find love in a town where she didn’t know a soul. Just different kinds of people. But she quickly learned that exposure to a much larger pool of people hiding behind their sometimes false profiles had significant downsides. Many users have reported experiencing harassment and bad behavior on dating apps , and they may end up feeling more disconnected and lonely than they were when trying to find love the traditional way.
The “game” comes with a growing array of negative experiences reported by users. Sexual harassment, ghosting, catfishing that is, luring people with a fake online persona , and meaningless one-night stands seem to be rampant on these platforms. And so we end up doing behaviors that we wouldn’t ordinarily do, which can be anything from making a nasty comment to sending a lewd photograph to making a connection with someone and then disappearing,” she said. These issues don’t seem to deter people from trying.
Yet even with these tools at our fingertips, loneliness has reached “epidemic levels,” according to a recent survey by the health services company Cigna. If treating online dating like a video game causes problems, some experts say finding a solution will require cultural, not just technological, changes. I don’t believe that the apps inherently make people less mindful. She points out that despite the downsides, many app users eventually find a match. Carbino says this is why people continue to use them, and mentions her own personal success.

See our picks list. Title: Internet Dating and Me Internet superstar Mike Jeavons films a documentary on the inherent “dangers” of online dating. Upon going on a blind date with someone he meets on the net, Mike sets himself up for a hilarious, but dignity-crushing encounter. I didn’t have high expectations for this one when I saw the first trailer for the Uncanny Valley as I thought that it tackled the most boring subject out of all of the films: internet dating!
I honestly thought that there was no way that this would be good because despite the fact that I like Mike Jeavons on his Shameful Sequels show, I honestly thought that this was a bit unadventurous for something for The Uncanny Valley, which is how I initially thought about most of the other shorts, but it has turned out that the more unadventurous ones have seemed to be the best, and this is no expectation. The plot is that Mike has been internet dating recently and has come across someone who has very similar interests to him and goes out on a build date with her but gets a shock surprise.
Sure, it is the least action packed of the shorts at this point, but works because of its witty writing and is an interesting allegory about how when going on those types of websites can lead to bad consequences. The final reason this works is because of the unpredictability of it, and the payoff is really good at the end, but you’ll have to watch it yourself to find out what I mean. For the penultimate Uncanny Valley short, it is great with its great writing and has me really hyped for the final short.

Skip navigation! Story from Online Dating. HBO’s new documentary, Swiped: Hooking Up in the Digital Age , paints a pretty bleak picture of what it’s like to use dating apps today. Every point the movie makes — that lots of people men especially use dating apps just for hookups, that there are plenty of cheaters on dating apps, that online dating is more difficult and dangerous if you’re Black or transgender or have another marginalized identity, and more — is valid.
But, it’s pretty easy to make counterarguments for these pessimistic views. Yes, terrible people exist on the internet, but they exist in real life, too. And dating apps do make meeting people easier especially for people with oppressed identities.
