Pet ultrasounds are a safe and commonly used way of imaging the inside of dogs, cats and other pets. Ultrasound is a very safe technology for dogs and cats, as sound waves do not damage or affect the body during the procedure. These are then reflected back into the machine and processed by a sophisticated computer algorithm which converts the sound into images of the body.

For most detailed ultrasound scans we will admit the pet for a full or part day. These procedures typically take 40 minutes to one hour to perform. For some procedures, such as an ultrasound scan to check if a dog or cat is pregnant, we can perform the scan during a normal consultation. Most animals tolerate scans without any issues, but vets are sometimes required to administer your dog or cat with a light sedation to help them relax.

An ultrasound scan can also help guide us to take samples. For example, if we notice an abnormal area inside a pet, we may use the ultrasound image to direct a needle to the site so we can collect a sample and have it analysed in a laboratory. If we have taken samples, they are sent to a laboratory which specialises in interpreting these types of samples in dogs, cats and other animals. It is possible to wait several days before we receive the results.

If samples are taken and sent to the laboratory, then there is an additional charge. During the consultation, a vet will be able to advise you on the cost in more detail.

As stretched hospitals put restrictions on birth plans and visitors, three pregnant women share their stories and concerns. It is nine days since pregnant women were officially placed among the “vulnerable” people who need to take more care than most during the coronavirus outbreak. Since then, advice from individual health board has changed on an almost daily basis, with women in some areas now being told their partners cannot be with them during early labour or on the postnatal ward. It’s a far cry from what most couples will have been eagerly imagining and looking forward to and leaves women facing the prospect of going through much of the process alone.

You can go here to see the current position in each Welsh health board and here to see the regularly updated official advice for women. It’s just 11 days since I left work on a half day, fully expecting to see my colleagues again the following morning. Ahead of our second antenatal class we used the spring sunshine as an excuse to go to Barry Island, have a walk in the sun and, obviously, eat chips.

This was the first of many plans being scrapped: a sign on the door at Barry Hospital saying the class had been cancelled. And that was it. I was now classed as high risk and should stay home. By 10pm that night, my husband’s boss had brilliantly told him he too would be home working to protect me. We’re now housebound except for our daily walk which gets slower and slower as I get bigger and bigger and I spend a large percentage wondering if popping into our local shop for an ice cream is an essential trip out.

That same week, I had a midwife appointment at my GP surgery and a scan at the Heath hospital. Both were carried out in vastly different circumstances to normal, but I cannot adequately explain how brilliant the midwives have been at giving us information.
